We are a pair of tree loving artists currently living steps away from our beloved hiking trails and waterfalls in Hamilton, Ontario. Our lively approach to discovering, salvaging and reviving fallen trees allows us to fulfil our vision as woodworkers and artists. The discoveries made in the opening of a log are profound. The natural beauty in the burls, swirls, twists and knots reveal stories that have been hidden for centuries. We feel honoured to provide a second life.
The large scale of our work allows for each piece to stand alone but can also be incorporated into a variety of interior design elements. The wood radiates energy, grounding the viewer into the natural world providing restoration and healing.
The wood's uneven surface and the three dimensional aspect of our art has the extra benefit of scattering and reflecting sound waves. The pieces work as acoustic panels leading to a more balanced, warmer and clearer sound in the space.
The process for our art begins with the wood. We search for diversity in species to provide a variation in texture, colour and grain. Finding ourselves on forest trails, century farms, city streets and cottage properties; we never know where we will find the catalyst for our next project.
Once sourced, the wood is cut and sanded into usable sizes. Each piece is heat treated for stability and the elimination of pests. From there we take our direction from the wood as it reveals its unique personality, driving the choices we make for composition and colour. To some pieces, we need only to apply Danish oil to enhance the natural colour and character. Other pieces are burned and painted to intensify the grain of the wood. Several layers of polyurethane are added for protection and durability.
Working with salvaged wood allows us to create art that encourages a transformational experience of discovery, inspiration and revelation. The wood is changed and so are we.
